Its history in a nutshell...

Molières, an English bastide, was founded in 1284 by Jean DE GRAILLY, Seneschal of the King of England. It was never completed and was not exposed to urban expansion like that of Monpazier. In 1316, Guilhem (William) of Toulouse, Seneschal of Périgord for Edward II of England, chose Molières as his power base and decided to build a castle here, which was also never completed. The town, ravaged by the Hundred Years’ War, was rebuilt afterwards only to be destroyed again during the ferocious battles of the Wars of Religion.

Its architecture in a nutshell...

The ruins of the castle : This perfectly-square-shaped fortress, designed to protect the village, was built from 1316 onwards. The enclosure and part of the dungeon are still visible today.

The Plantagenet – Gothic-style church was built in the 13th century and comprises cross-ribbed vaults and an imposing bell-tower on its north facade. A parapet linked the north and south towers; the latter was destroyed in the 19th century. These towers were used as reserves in the event of attack. The church was left in ruins during the Wars of Religion and major restoration work was undertaken during the 19th century.
