Cadouin Abbey
A listed Historical Monument, it was founded in 1115 by Géraud de Salles along a small, narrow valley. In 1119, it was attached to Citeaux (an abbey in Burgundy in which Saint Bernard would publish the reform known as the Cistercian reform). Cadouin quickly became the most prestigious abbey in Périgord. Its reputation was essentially built around a piece of fabric which was long thought to be the Shroud of Turin. A major pilgrimage developed around this relic and would lead to the abbey’s enrichment.
Visit of the cloisters, a masterpiece of flamboyant Gothic art, built between the 15th and 16th centuries.
