The church of Saint-Christophe de Montferrand-du-Périgord

The church of Saint-Christophe de Montferrand-du-Périgord

The old church of Montferrand, surrounded by its small cemetery, is located some 800 metres from the village. Placed under the patronage of Saint-Christophe, it was the first parish building.
Today, it presents itself to the visitor as a powerful bell tower flanked by a tiny nave.

The remains of the nave and the choir contain an iconographic ensemble that is quite exceptional for such a modest monument. The paintings range from the 12th to the 16th century. Christ in majesty, surrounded by the symbols of the four evangelists, the patron saint of the church, Saint Christopher, a "miracle" of Saint Leonard, patron saint of prisoners, are the main scenes represented on the walls.

On the vault, the Pantocrator surrounded by the Tetramorph, and on the eastern wall of the chevet, the Annunciation and St Christopher are paintings.
On the west façade of the bell tower, traces of a roof departure suggest that it had two or three bays in total. The main reduction of the building was in its length, which was cut in half in the 19th century. The choir is barrel-vaulted. A cornice runs along the top of the choir, emphasising the beginning of the vault. On the north and south sides, semi-circular arches rest on projecting shelves (imposts), which are themselves supported by square piers.

The bell tower is a high tower that covers the entire choir. It is surrounded at the top by a cornice supported by corbels which are carved with human faces at each corner. Each side of the bell tower is decorated with two bays.

Since 2001 it has been listed as a historic monument in its entirety.
