The Dordogne River’s side channel

To make navigation easier on the Dordogne River, a choice communication axis for Southern Périgord since the Early Middle Ages, a channel linking Mauzac and Tuilières was dug between 1838 and 1843. Discover the, locks, ponds, aqueducts, lockmasters’ houses and, especially, the Tuilières stairway along the watercourse.
However, with the arrival of the railway and roads, inland waterway freight transport decreased and the canal fell out of use.

Today, its potential is being promoted. It has become a highly-popular fishing and walking spot.

The dam

Since 1987, the fish ladder has also been operational in Mauzac. An extensive body of water, located next to the EDF (French electricity board) dam is a must for fishing, sailing, rowing and canoeing enthusiasts. The banks have been landscaped and are a popular meeting place for walkers and hikers.

The old "ferryman’s house" has been transformed into an exhibition centre. Photos and post cards of Mauzac from days gone by are displayed here. On the first floor, EDF has set up an exhibition on the development of hydroelectric power and the local Federation of Anglers and Hunters invites you to discover local fauna. Open from 10 am to 7 pm in summer.
