Monbazillac

Monbazillac is a "crowning jewel" as far as winemaking villages go.

Some history first...

Perched on a charming hilltop (Mont Basilius), proudly overlooking the Dordogne River valley and the town of Bergerac, it boasts an incredibly rich heritage that will definitely delight even the most curious visitors.

Monks were the first to plant and cultivate vines on these Sunkissed hillsides. Legend has it that as they forgot to harvest the grapes at the right time, "Botrytis Cinerea" (a fungus that affects plants) developed and led to the production of Monbazillac's sweet, syrupy wine, whose reputation extends far beyond our borders.

The Château de Monbazillac, owned by the homonymous cooperative winery is most definitely the showpiece but the vine-covered hillsides, which stretch in every direction as far as the eye can see, offer an irresistible invitation to explore the countryside on foot or by bike.
