A bit of history
The castle was acquired by Michel de Montaigne for his younger brother who had it rebuilt at the end of the 16th century.

Montpeyroux today
The commune of Montpeyroux is situated in the picturesque valley of the Lidoire, which was of economic and historical importance until the end of the 18th century.
If you take the path alongside the Château de Mathécoulon, you will find this charming 12th century Romanesque church, which is now a listed building. Its apse is one of the most elegant in the region with its nine semi-circular arches and its cornice with sculpted modillions.
The influence of Saintongean Romanesque art can be seen in the west façade. The latter includes a portal framed by false bays. This Romanesque church is composed of a short nave vaulted with broken cradles, a front choir covered by a dome and a deep choir with a semi-circular apse.
