A bit of history
A deep-water port, this small village of bargemen, fishermen, craftspeople and vine and wine traders reached its craft and trading zenith during the Golden Age of inland waterway transportation on the Dordogne River.

Its quays, wineries and warehouses bustled with a vibrant river-based way of life.
Today, Port Sainte Foy and Ponchapt has become a hub for tourism and leisure: hiking trails, Romanesque churches and mills, 2 water sport and leisure bases (rowing and canoeing) and, last but not least, the River Centre with its spectacular view over the Dordogne. It is located in the historic wineries on the quays. This museum relates river life, from the prehistoric dugout to the last dredging barge, the bargemen, the related professions, the freight carried, the lifestyles, as well as the fauna and flora found along the river and the winemaking area that was connected to the river since time immemorial.
